What is a Smart Rewards Mastercard®?
The Smart Rewards Mastercard, issued by Sunrise Banks N.A., Member FDIC, is a reloadable prepaid account, by which consumers will participate in a closed pilot for testing purposes. Primarily, the program is a proof of concept for consumers to earn and redeem rewards. The consumer experience mirrors a credit account experience – however no traditional credit line or overdraft facilities are available to the consumer.

Getting Started

How do I get a card?
This is a closed pilot and available only by invitation.
Will my credit report be checked if I apply for a card?
No, a credit check is not required or performed to open a Smart Rewards Mastercard account. However, an identity check is performed during activation. Activation and participation in this pilot is contingent upon passing this mandatory identification confirmation.
Will using the card affect my credit?
No, the Smart Rewards Mastercard is a prepaid card so your card usage doesn’t affect your credit rating.
Why do you need my Social Security Number?
Under the USA Freedom Act (H.R. 2048, Pub.L. 114–23), in order to minimize the risks associated with money laundering and terrorist funding, individuals are required to provide certain personal information to the issuing institution (Sunrise Banks, N.A.) in order to activate an account.
Is the information I submit online and in the Smart Rewards Mastercard app safe?
Yes. The technology supporting Smart Rewards Mastercard has passed PCI Level 1 compliance, uses Transport Layer Security (TLS) version 1.2 to secure any data transferred to or from pages where you submit or view personal information, and stored data is encrypted using AES 256 encryption.
How long will it take to receive my card?
A bulk distribution process of the cards associated with the account will be conducted by the pilot organizers.
Can I receive a secondary card for my Smart Rewards Mastercard?
No, the Smart Rewards Mastercard does not support secondary or dependent cards.
How do I activate my card?
You must activate your card through the Smart Rewards Mastercard app.
How do I set up my personal identification number (PIN)?
You can easily set up or update your card-related PIN through the Smart Rewards Mastercard app or by calling 1 (833) 736-5441.
Is there a minimum balance for a Smart Rewards Mastercard?
No, there is no minimum balance requirement. However, cards with a zero balance and no activity may be closed after 90 days.
What is the maximum balance of funds I can have on my card?
The maximum balance for the card is $5,000.

Using Your Card

Where can I use my Smart Rewards Mastercard?
You can use the card to purchase goods and services everywhere Debit Mastercard is accepted.
Can I use my Smart Rewards Mastercard for PIN purchases?
Yes. You can use the Smart Rewards Mastercard for PIN purchases. If the merchant's terminal accepts PIN, choose the debit option and enter your PIN when prompted.
Can I use my Smart Rewards Mastercard for signature purchases?
Yes. If the merchant's terminal accepts credit, select the credit option. You will be asked for your signature, rather than for your PIN. Please note that your card is still a prepaid card and can only be used for the money available on your card. Selecting credit only changes the way the card processes. It does not change your card type, and credit will not be extended.
Can I use the Smart Rewards Mastercard for online purchases?
Yes, you can use your card number for online purchases. Please make sure that you enter the correct billing information, including your name and the address on file with Smart Rewards Mastercard, or the transaction may be declined. Please note that the Smart Rewards Mastercard cannot be used for online gambling.
What happens when I return something I bought with my Smart Rewards Mastercard?
Any refund for goods or services purchased with the card will be made in the form of a credit to the card. While most merchants settle credits daily, when you see a credit to your balance may vary depending on the merchant. Ask the merchant when you should expect to see a credit. Typically, a credit from a return should reflect on your card balance within a few business days.
How can I withdraw cash with my card?

You can use your card and PIN to withdraw cash at any ATM with the Mastercard, Maestro, or Excel/Exchange logo.

Additionally, some merchants will allow you to get cash back when you use your card and PIN to make a purchase.

Do I have the option to request overdrafts on my card?
No. The Smart Rewards Mastercard does not allow purchases above the spending balance on the card.
Do some merchants get authorization to charge more than the actual amount of a purchase?

As with any card program, when the Smart Rewards Mastercard is used for certain kinds of transactions, the merchant accepting the card may request advance authorization for an estimated amount of the transaction. This is usually because the final purchase amount is not known at the time you present your card. For example:

  • Gas Stations will accept the Smart Rewards Mastercard to prepay for fuel inside the station, but "pay at the pump" purchases may be authorized for an amount greater than the gas purchase. Fuel purchases made at the merchant’s inside counter are most often authorized based upon the consumer’s desired final purchase amount.
  • Restaurants, hotels, and car rental agencies may get authorization for an estimated purchase amount, rather than the actual purchase amount.
What is an Authorization Hold?
An “Authorization Hold” is a temporary hold on the funds available on your card for the amount of that authorized transaction. An Authorization Hold generally will be released within 3 business days after the date the transaction is authorized. However, certain merchants, especially rental car companies, hotels and others that authorize high dollar amounts may cause an Authorization Hold to remain in effect for an extended period of time. You can see each Authorization Hold on the funds available on your card at any time by calling 1 (855) 978-7011 or logging in to the Smart Rewards Mastercard website. Certain transactions may be handled differently by certain merchants. If you are unsure of a merchant's policy, it is best to ask before using your card.

Managing Your Card

How do I check my balance?
You can check your balance any time on the main dashboard in the Smart Rewards Mastercard app. You can also call 1 (833) 736-5441 .
Will I receive statements showing charges on my Smart Rewards Mastercard?
Yes. Once you activate your card, you will receive monthly electronic statements showing all activity on your Smart Rewards Mastercard, which you can access in the Smart Rewards Mastercard app under Account Settings. Note: this option will not show up until you have used the card for at least a month.
Do I have to wait until I get a statement to see the transactions on my Smart Rewards Mastercard?
No. Your Smart Rewards Mastercard app will provide you with up-to-date information on all your transactions. You can also hear this information by calling 1 (833) 736-5441.
Can I have Alerts go to multiple phone numbers?
No. You can have alerts sent to only one mobile phone number.
What is a “pending” transaction?
A pending transaction is one that has been authorized for a specific amount but has not been submitted for final settlement. The funds are still in your account but are reserved and cannot be used. Posted transactions have been submitted and cleared for payment to the merchant, and the amount of the transaction has been deducted from the funds available on your Smart Rewards Mastercard.
Can I add my Smart Rewards Mastercard to Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, or Google Pay?
Not yet. Those services are not currently supported.
Why do I sometimes need a text message to log in?
For security purposes, every device used to access your Smart Rewards Mastercard has to be registered. When a device isn’t recognized, you’ll get a text message with a code to register it (standard text message rates apply). If you do not receive the text message or would prefer not to receive one, you can call customer support at 1 (833) 736-5441 to get a verification code.
What if I need a replacement card?
The simplest way to order a replacement card is through the Smart Rewards Mastercard app. You can also order a replacement card by calling 1 (833) 736-5441. If you need a replacement card, we recommend you verify your transactions to ensure only your authorized transactions are noted. If your card has been used for unauthorized purchases, a customer service agent will be able to assist you with the dispute process.
How can I change my PIN?
You can easily change your PIN used for point of sale purchases or to withdraw cash from ATMs through the Smart Rewards Mastercard app under Account Settings or by calling 1 (833) 736-5441.
How do I update my address?
You can update your address through the Smart Rewards Mastercard app under Account Settings, or by calling 1 (833) 736-5441. Please be advised that for security purposes you cannot change your address until 30 days after activation.
What do I do to speak to someone in customer support?
You can call 1 (833) 736-5441 and select the option for a customer support agent.
How do I lock/unlock my Smart Rewards Mastercard?
You can lock and unlock your Smart Rewards Mastercard through the Smart Rewards Mastercard app under Account Settings by logging on to the Smart Rewards Mastercard website, or by calling 1 (833) 736-5441. While your card is locked, it will be declined for any purchases. If you don’t see these options, it’s because your card hasn’t been activated.
What if my Smart Rewards Mastercard is lost or stolen?

If you believe that you have lost your Smart Rewards Mastercard, you can “lock” the card right from the Smart Rewards Mastercard app under Account Settings or by calling 1 (833) 736-5441. If you find your card, you can then just go back into the app and “unlock” the card to use the card normally.

If the card is permanently lost or stolen, you can report it lost/stolen under Account Settings. in Review your transaction history to make sure no unauthorized purchases were made. You can also call 1 (833) 736-5441 to file a report. If your card has been used for unauthorized purchases, a customer support agent will be able to assist you with the dispute process.

Fees

Are there fees associated with the Smart Rewards Mastercard?

There are no annual, set up, monthly service, or overdraft fees, and no minimum balance requirements with the Smart Rewards Mastercard. However, certain transactions made with the card may incur a fee. Please see the chart below for more information.

We do not charge a fee for international purchases or for currency conversion. However, a merchant may charge you a fee for currency conversion if you choose to pay in U.S. dollars and have the merchant process the conversion.

How do I earn reward points with the Smart Rewards Mastercard?
For every penny that is spent a point is earned. There may be different promotions running that may increase the points based factors such as type of transaction. For example, consumer may receive double points for dining transactions between a certain period of time.
When are the rewards issued?
Once a transaction has settled the points will be issued accordingly to the customer’s account.
How can the rewards be used?
The reward points can used to make purchases.
